Reflecting on the recent Eid period, a group of learners from the Malek Fahd Islamic School Student Service Council (SSC) had the privilege of visiting Liverpool Hospital to share the joy and spirit of Eid with children receiving medical care.
The initiative was inspired by the Islamic values of compassion, service, and community responsibility. In preparation for the visit, SSC learners worked together to organise and distribute Eid gifts to young patients in the children’s ward. Their aim was simple: to bring smiles, comfort, and a sense of celebration to children and families experiencing a challenging time.
The visit provided learners with an opportunity to demonstrate the values of Faith, Excellence, and Service beyond the classroom while making a positive contribution to the wider community.
Bringing joy to young patients
Upon arriving at the hospital, learners were warmly welcomed by hospital staff and given the opportunity to meet children receiving treatment and recovery care. As gifts were handed out, the atmosphere quickly filled with excitement, gratitude, and joy. For many children, the small gesture brought a moment of happiness and helped create positive memories during their hospital stay.
While the gifts themselves were appreciated, it was the personal interactions that made the greatest impact. Through conversations, laughter, and shared moments, learners experienced firsthand the power of kindness and human connection. They witnessed how simple acts of generosity can brighten someone’s day and offer encouragement during difficult circumstances.
The visit was a powerful reminder that meaningful service is often found in small acts of care and consideration. A smile, a conversation, or a thoughtful gift can make a significant difference in the lives of others.
Islamic values in action
The experience provided learners with an opportunity to put their faith into action and reflect on the importance of serving others. Islam encourages believers to support their communities, care for those in need, and work together in acts of goodness.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ
“And cooperate in righteousness and piety.” (Quran 5:2)
This powerful verse reminds us that positive change is achieved when people come together in service of others. Through this initiative, our learners demonstrated how collective efforts can create meaningful moments of happiness and support for those facing challenges.
The visit also reflected the teachings of the Prophet Muḥammad (s), who said:
أَحَبُّ النَّاسِ إِلَى اللَّهِ أَنْفَعُهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ
“The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to others.”
By dedicating their time and energy to bringing joy to young patients, our learners experienced the importance of being a positive influence within their community and serving others with sincerity.
Living our graduate qualities
This initiative strongly reflected Graduate Quality 8: Empathetic. Throughout the visit, learners demonstrated compassion, understanding, and genuine care for the wellbeing of others. They showed sensitivity towards children and families facing difficult circumstances and sought to uplift them through kindness, encouragement, and thoughtful interaction.
The experience also embodied Graduate Quality 1: God-consciousness (Taqwa). Learners were reminded that acts of service are not merely social responsibilities but opportunities to seek the pleasure of Allah through sincere intentions and positive action. Their efforts demonstrated an understanding that faith is expressed through both worship and service to humanity.
For many learners, the visit was a humbling and transformative experience. It encouraged them to reflect on the blessings they enjoy in their own lives and to appreciate the importance of gratitude. It also reinforced the understanding that leadership is not defined solely by positions or titles, but by a willingness to serve others and contribute positively to society.
Building future community leaders
The initiative highlights the important role that service learning plays in the educational experience at Malek Fahd Islamic School. Through authentic opportunities to engage with the wider community, learners develop the character, empathy, and sense of responsibility needed to become informed and compassionate contributors to society.
